Introduction
A good product description helps customers understand what you make and why it is worth buying. You do not need fancy marketing language or long paragraphs. You only need clarity, honesty and a warm tone.
This guide shows you how to write a friendly description for your first listing in a few simple steps.
Step 1: Start With One Clear Sentence
Your first sentence should tell the customer exactly what the product is.
Examples:
- “A handmade lavender soap made using natural ingredients.”
- “A bag of mixed salad leaves grown in my garden.”
- “A knitted beanie made from soft British wool.”
This short sentence sets the stage for everything that follows.
Step 2: Tell Them What Makes It Special
You do not need to oversell. One or two warm details are enough.
Examples:
- made in small batches
- grown locally
- handcrafted
- made with traditional methods
- made with British ingredients or materials
- limited seasonal product
- made with my Grandma’s recipe
Choose one or two details. Keep it simple.
Step 3: Add Clear Product Information
Customers want facts. Make them easy to find.
Include:
- size or quantity
- materials or ingredients
- colours or variations
- how it is packaged
- any care or storage instructions
Short bullet points work better than long text.
Step 4: Keep the Tone Friendly and Real
Write as if you are speaking to a friendly neighbour.
Avoid phrases that sound forced or overly polished.
Better:
- “I make these in small batches at home.”
- “This is one of my favourite things to grow each season.”
Avoid:
- “This premium luxury artisanal handcrafted masterpiece…”
Customers prefer simple honesty.
Step 5: Add Delivery Information at the End
Customers like to know:
- how you send the product
- how quickly you dispatch
- if delivery is tracked
- how it will be packaged
This helps them feel confident placing an order.
Example:
“Orders are packed safely and posted with Royal Mail within two working days.”
or
“I make this once a week, so it will be shipped to you freshly made.”
Step 6: Use Short Paragraphs and Clear Sections
Short paragraphs increase readability.
Break your description into small parts:
- What it is
- What makes it special
- Important product details
- Delivery information
Customers skim listings. Help them find the important bits quickly.
Step 7: Review It as a Customer
Before publishing, ask yourself:
- Is it clear what the product is?
- Are the important details easy to see?
- Would I feel comfortable buying based on this information?
If something feels unclear, update it.
Small improvements go a long way.
Step 8: Keep It Short and Trustworthy
A strong listing:
- explains the product simply
- shares one or two special details
- lists clear facts
- gives delivery information
- sounds friendly and genuine
You do not need to write a long story. Clarity builds trust more than anything else.
Summary
A good listing description includes:
- one clear opening sentence
- one or two things that make it special
- key product details
- simple delivery information
- a warm, honest tone
- short paragraphs for easy reading
Your first version does not need to be perfect. You can update and improve it later.
